Default Is an LSD worth it?

No not the drug

So since I did my conversion a few years back it seems the market has moved on with the likes of Mfactory now offering helical LSDs which can be fitted to a non LSD box.

Question is, is it really worth it? Any experiences on here of he new stuff such as Mfactory? Iíve been searching through old posts which are a good 5-6 years old now and the options seemed mixed then, common theme being itís a little harder to turn into corners which is a common with an LSD.

Is it worth having on a mini with a 3.4/3.7 FD? Iím looking to use mine for mainly spirited road driving and occasional drag/track use.

Cheers

I have a Watson’s 3.7 and an S9b with LSD. I’ve not driven this car without an LSD but it puts the power down really well whilst cornering. I don’t have any issues with turn in.

Back in my EP3 days when I fitted a quaife helical the difference was night and day. From that experience alone I wouldn’t be without one on a performance car.

I've got the OEM diff in mine and I wouldn't want to use an open diff, go for it you won't be disappointed

Good to hear, now I just need to get saving and add it to the list with the other x100 things I need to buy to finish the damn thing off (how an earth did I end up messing with minis again?).

Really nice to see the forum still going and some of the "old school" members still about. I can't get used to using the Facebook groups and prefer a forum for stuff like this.

Hi monkey and all,

First time posting after a long time stalking...

I just wanted to see how you managed with the LSD? I’m looking at a 3.4 FD from MFactory and considering the helical LSD to go with it.

I too will be using the car for “spirited” (loved that) road use, so any information you have would be ace.

Rich

Hey,

I got the LSD in the end along with a 3.4 FD. The car isn't on the road yet so I'm unable to say!

I run the standard Honda helical LSD in mine and it is excellent, I'd hate to drive one of these conversions without an LSD

Hey Monks

If you want spirited road driving then go without LSD

If you want spirited track days (the ones where your not bothered about times) then go without LSD

If your bothered about times on the tarmac stuff then go LSD

Easy decision huh?

I only do spirited road driving and feel the definite benefits of the lsd, especially at lower speeds, standing starts, sharp corners and hairpins where without the lsd you can tell that one wheel would have spin up without it. I do run a K series Metro frame so it is less sensitive to the lsd tugging at the steering wheel and currently have a stock Honda 4.4 FD.

Ultimately it's down to personal preference and mine is not to be without one

Thanks for all of the replies... might sit on my hands for a bit, plenty of other things to keep me busy while I mull it over. Reckon the 3.4FD is right up my alley though. Very keen to see how you get on with it on the road, good luck!

Cheers

Hi Monkey and all, i run 3.4FD (bought from monkey), my mini is only about 650kg and with an open diff its an animal all over the road in 1st & 2nd, wouldn't want the gearing any lower. I have ITB,S & 195BHP @ 153mph on the rolling road. I wish i had fitted a LSD, maybe in the future when funds allow.
Cheers Jeff.
