Default live record audio from monitor

Hi

Not car related obviously!

Little project id like to start but not sure where to begin.
Lets say I watch a youtube video of someone playing some drums for 2 minutes, and I want to capture the second the drummer hits the symbol (so a noise above a certain db) and log the time into a sql database or excel spreadsheet.

As I imagine it.... press start/record on a program and start the youtube video. the drummer hits the symbols 10 seconds in... so it logs 10 seconds into the database. by the end of the video, we could have 24 instances of the symbols hit - once at 10 seconds, again at 15 seconds and so on.

just its basically a sound recorder/logger. anyone know how or where to start please?!

thanks

i use pro tools and cuebass in my studio but unfortunatly for you,
you wont isolate the cymbals verry well if a full kit it being used aswell,
thers allways some big clump in the way,
i record cymbals with mics over the top but as said some of the rest creeps in,
audasaty is a good free sound work stashon,
disrigard if i didnt read you correctly

It's all good. I've tried audiocity (or whatever it's called) and that does exactly what I want, I can record sounds and isolate anything over a certain db. It can even transfer the data to excel which is also great but it doesn't do it 'live', you have to finish the recording then get the data after which won't work for what I want.

It's not actually to measure a drum that was just the example, either way it's isolating a certain sound that I want to do.

matlab or python could do this, dont ask me how as its been an age since I done any academic stuff but theres bound to be tutorials for sound analysis in both as it involvs time and frequency domain analysis so is good for learning how to use either. lol
