Default Honda B18 - sprint and hillclimb car

Hi all.

I'm in the process of building a Honda engined mini for sprints and hillclimbs (UK). I've been competing on and off in speed events for years after giving up rallying because I had no money or talent.

I had a good season last year in a Clio Cup but they are not really my scene (I'm too old) and I've been keen to get back into minis.

I bought a 1275GT off eBay that, sadly, needed more work than the seller suggested. In the quest for some panels I came across a bare shell (again on eBay) that looked pretty sad but had a nearly new floor but with bad welding. The plan was to buy the shell, cut out and clean up the floor to use in the 1275 and scrap the rest. I had it delivered for a really low price and when it arrived, I was quite pleased to see that the shell was pretty good with newish floor, cross member, sills, some decent repairs and some shoddy ones. A plan was hatched to use this shell as the base for a sprint and hillclimb car and the 1275 GT put on hold.

I had already ordered a Safety Devices Multipoint bolt in cage from Minisport and after months of being messed around by them it finally arrived. As my welding isn't good enough, my plan was to fit the cage, tack the (19) mounting plates and then ship it off to somebody with better welding than me!

I got messed around with the first guy who promised to do the welding but that turned into a good thing as it's now progressing well with somebody really good!

New bulkhead (this was fitted before I made the decision to go Honda powered!)

I'll be using individual throttle bodies - these have been put together using bits I had lying around - I will get a manifold made when I have the engine in the car and can work out bulkhead clearances.

The modified distributor - all I will be using is the Crank pickup (24 toothed wheel), with one tooth removed. The car will be running on an Emerald K6+ ECU and the trigger wheel configuration will give both crank position and cam phase.

The local engineering company (who sponsor the championship_ will be shortening the distributor shaft and making an alloy blank cover.

Have the rules changed recently ? My understanding was that these sorts of engine conversions immediately put you in Sports Libra and you would be racing against single seaters and spaceframes.

Yes. Sports Libre. I had originally planned to go into Mod Prod (with a K series Bike head) but there's nobody in that class in the Welsh Championship. I'll be in Libre with other Honda powered cars - a twin engined CRX and a Honda engined 205 I think.

The plan is to keep the Mini under 600 kilos so it should be relatively competitive against the other 'Welsh' cars. I'm not bothered about being uncompetitive against Libre cars in other championships. I have always fancied a space framed / silhouette car though so that may be the next project!
