Hi all, I was wondering if you could help me to choose a good but cheap helmet? I want an open face one so I can see where I am going better, I know people say you cant put a price on your head but if you cant afford a silly priced helmet then there isnt much of an option lol. I was looking at this one:
http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...club-j1-helmet The next one up from that one is this one: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...en-face-helmet I need one for hill climbing and sprinting and obviously it needs to be FIA spec, but is ECE spec acceptable? There is £100 difference between the two and I was looking for one thats inbetween on price. Does anyone know of some other products or shops that I could have a look at? Thanks Kris

Go for whatever the regulations require you to have.
As long as it's marked as approved for what you need it for, you should be good. |

Don't buy online, go to a local bike shop & find one that feels 'right' few years ago I went out to buy a top of the range, Aria or Shoei £500+ but came back with a Nitro >£200 as it just felt so much better. After you have got it, then look after it, don't let anyone borrow it, never drop it on the floor, have somewhere in the car that has padding that you can put it so it doesn't roll around & get damaged. When it's out of the car have a bag to keep it in & put it on a shelf again where it's not going to get damaged.
I'm a bit paranoid about my helmets but they have saved my life a couple of times, I went away to the US to work last month, when I got back I found my son had borrowed mine to nip out on his bike, I've given it to him as I know I'll never wear it now. Alan... |

As said there,DON'T buy on line!
I'm not talking about price or safety! What I'm saying is if it rubs or annoys you it's a real pain. Just like shoes, it's ok to roam around in your garden but you won't want to walk 50 miles in um,

A lot of the RAF lads are using the V2 sport range and rate them very highly, my lad had one until he lost it somewhere.
I bought a £500 Bell race helmet and I like the fit, comfort and looks of it and no doubt it is very safe but I have never been able to keep the visor down because it just steams up. My old ramshackle moped helmet never suffered the same even when I used it at Barkston in the 205. |

Definitely try before you buy. I went to a local homotorcycle shop when I bought mine. I've never felt so out of place in all my life, but I've got a good helmet that is comfortable and well made. Turns out my head isn't as big as I thought....

You can measure your head, like I did with the Bell and it fitted fine, my moped helmet I got from Hein Gerick and I know how you feel, all them funny people with sticky out knees walking all hunched up, scary.

I agree with trying one on in a shop.
I also ride bikes and when I first started riding this was stressed to me as well. Different brands have different sizing guides and all feel different. In AGV I am an XL but in shoei I am a M. If I had just bought online I would have ended up with the wrong size which can, in some cases, be worse than no helmet at all Even if you go into a store just to try them on for reference and then go home have a look online and buy one that way. Another one of my concerns is that helmets coming in the post, depending on how well packed could be useless before they have even got to use, poorly packed, mishandled and so on, but I guess you get that same risk from a store. I also agree with the lid care as mentioned above. I was told by my instructor years ago, never balance your helmet on anything, tank, bars, a wall. Have a cloth and keep it on the floor or in a seat. If you drop it then that's another £300 for another one. I quite enjoy helmet shopping! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks for the replies everyone, it has become quite an interesting thread actually. I think I will still go with that helmet online, I have measured my head as per their instructions and I am a medium. I have tried my parteners open faced helmet on and thats a medium and is perfect and tbh when I go go karting I am a medium there too ha ha. I know that goes against some of the advice given above but I wont be wearing it much and it definitely wont be for long periods, I understand its a totally different issue for motorbike riders as you need it to be perfect.
Thanks Kris

Theres no point going to a bike shop there helmets are not the correct standards for MSA use.
I have loads of bike helmets I could sell you but you wont be able to use one at your local hill climb. Allan

That had also gone through my mind too.... Well not the bit about you selling me one but it being the right standard.
