Default 1800 16v - all steel round nose

Thought i would post up my latest build, since i sold my clubman shell back in 2012 I've had a Mk v 998. My last mini was very track orientated, i fancied a change and a more road focused machine.
The idea is to use some of the gear from my last car but in an all steel body, something very clean, an original looking ish car, hopefully show worthy - it will still be powerful but I intend to build a car I will get more use out of.

When i bought it, it was very original, and I was going to use it with the standard 998.. but after driving it for a while it has some things that need attention. The brakes were shocking, there was an annoying knock - i think from one of the hubs and the body work needed some tlc..

So i took it off the road to start the build, a ground up nut and bolt rebuild.

So here's the new mini back in 2012.







Looks can be deceiving..

Will be making a few rapid updates to bring you up to date, hope you enjoy

So the strip down began.

found a few areas that needed attention.



This had been repaired.. with masking tape lol



And it has a nasty set of over sills. Other than that it seem very good, original and not like a patchwork quilt.

When removing the over sills as expected the old ones were underneath.. The nearside original sill was in a bad way the offside only had a few holes - all the floors and inner sills are solid, so i was very lucky!



Next on the list is to remove the front end and nearside inner fitch. I could save the other side so thats a bonus.[/size]



Seemed to be slow going at this point, I spent ages making and welding in a few repairs panels, some of them wont be seen but i really didn't want a patchwork quilt of a car so it took a bit longer to get it looking stock.

This was a bit scary



and this was interesting, double rear valance!..



but an easy fix, all closing panels also replaced.



floor going in and inner wing prep



front end on.



Next on the list was the engine mock up before booking it in for a blast and paint.

Im really keen on building a retro-mod style concept - stay true to the classic / retro looks but add modern running gear and power.*

With that said, this is whats going in - a 1.8 vauxhall small block

Now those who know my last build know i cant just throw in a standard lump.. so i set about doing some mild internal upgrades.

ARP rod bolts, this will allow my to increase the rev limt by a few k.*

and solid idlers, the plastic ones have a*tendency to let go when pushed a bit harder.

This will then be finished off with a custom intake (Itb's) new Ecu to allow mapping (MBE via Sbd Motorsport) new pumps etc etc, modded box to convert to hydraulic clutch

Time for shotblasting and a trip to the paint shop.*

The pictures actually make it look decent but in reality a lot of panels have needed to be replaced.. Following shotblasting I now needed two rear quarters a door skin and boot skin.. The passenger door was "fixed" at some point, the lower half was just tacked on and filled over.*

But all was sorted and was ready for paint.

Following some great work by Lee at the 'Premier mini Company' the mini is now back and sitting in the garage waiting for me to put it all back together.*

The first time I've had a professional paint a car for me, and i have to say it looks mint!

Not really had much 'car time' since Bingley, nice start to the show season, had a good look at some well built cars and new parts on offer.
I also managed to pick up a new steering rack (thanks mini spares) so fitted that at the weekend



So following a good look round I couldn't resist a few bits of bling.

Billet alloy top shock mounts



Billet alloy tower bolts



Just working on the alternator bracket before lifting the car over the engine.

This brings us up to date, now the fun bit begins *

So what are the major differences between this engine and the x16xe?

I was under the impression that the 1800 had a little more torque as standard, but actually once tuned wasnt really any better than the 1600.

Should see more torque and power, and the inlet face is angled so I can fit 90mm trumpets.

A mate of mine has the same build in a nova and it's much more responsive and nippier than my 1600 build.

The 1800 has a much better head - and it's a newer block so I'm hoping it won't smoke as much as most of the C16XE's!

hmm, all sounds pretty tempting to me.

Does your mate have any dyno prints to compare to an c16?

That paintwork looks amazing buddy, really liking it, and the engine being painted too.

Looks as though it's going to be a cracker there Mark. Loving the paint job. As you're aware, my build is a C16xe. Makes me wonder if I'm doing the right thing!

Just as a matter of interest, in your old set up you still could have used 90mm trumpets, not a problem - I have them on my car in a standard roundnose. I asked SBD about using 40mm trumpets and here's what Steve said:

"The power you would lose by using 40mm trumpets is considerable, the amount of money you would have to spend in an attempt to tune the engine to regain the losses would be huge. The torque loss from running the 40mm air horns in the low to mid range could be 20 - 30lbft or more, making the engine not very nice to drive."

Needless to say, I binned the 40mm horns and bought 90s. I think the point is you can use a longer intake manifold using the 1800 configuration due to the steep angle further improving performance.

I'm hoping to get 190bhp out of mine. What power do you hope to get?

Hello Nudger,

Well we can't hijack Mark's (apologies Mark) post but 190 should be realistic. If i throw more money at it I should get more.

I already have a modified C16xe head, pocketed pistons and steel rods. I bought the ITBs from Mark last year (SBD 164 kit) cream injectors and maybe most important, a custom exhaust made in strict accordance with SBD's blueprint.

The headers were so long that until the pipes made it from 4 to 2 pipes, the pipes had to be stacked under the sump and a slot made in the sump. I think having a custom exhaust or something that fits through the Allspeed sub frame cannot be under estimated especially running a smaller 1600cc versus 1800 or 2000. At least if you do a 4 into 1 exhaust with a 2Ltr you'll still get 140-150bhp, with a 1600 you can afford to throw away power.

I'm still yet to buy the camshafts.

One day when we get over the pedal box and EPAS I'll start a build diary....
