Default Project Innocenti Bertone 16V

Hereby I present my new project, an Innocenti Bertone 90L. After I decided to sell my Estate I went on the look for an Innocenti. First because it is something different and second a bit of youth sentiment.

For people who do not know what an Innocenti is, this is a Mini based small Italian car designed by Bertone. For instance: the whole drivetrain and rear suspension is identical to a Mini.

In the past I have owned several Innocenti's. A few De Tomaso's, a Mille and one with a Daihatsu drivetrain.

Finding one was not easy because when you think a Mini can rust you never owned an Innocenti. A good source is Italy, but getting it over would cost to much in the end.

Then i suddenly found this into this one at a Dutch Mini specialist. Originally from Spain it was taken to The Netherlands by its Dutch owner around 2000. It spent 6 years halfway under a carport and then spent another 6 years with the company I bought it from.The car still has a Spanish licenseplate.

Spending 6 years halfway under a carport left its marks. Especialle the A-pillars and the corners under the window suffered. The doors and bootlid need replacing. For the rest the car is more or less sound although surface rust everywhere.

What are the plans:
1.3 16V Swift Gti engine
4-pots Metro ventilated brakes
13" wheels (already bought: 13" Wolfrace with 175/50/13)
bucketseats (already bought: Sparco with adjustable back)

For the rest some adaptations to suspension, interior and exterior.

This will be more of a long term project, first I want to finish my Suzuki turbo project. Below how the car is at the moment.

That would make a great project,hope there is not any more tin worm when you strip it out.

Structurally the car is sound, but some nasty things will turn up for sure. This is the "best" of both worlds, Italian body with British mechanics. It is not meant to be a show car so that makes things a bit easier to fix.

It has been a while but I finally started the project. The Mizuki has grinded to a standstill a bit because lack of inspiration to finish so a fresh start with something "new".

Towed the Innocenti to the garage and started off taking out the engine. And to my big surprise al went fine, no rusty bolts that dont wanna come off, things breaking off etc.

After that it was taking out the front windscreen, dash and interior. No big surprises, only some rust damage to the left hand inner sill.

Tomorrow going to cut out the rust and make replacement sheet metal. That will probably take some time because of the shapes I have to get in because lack of replacement bodypanels.

Started the welding and ofcourse it is more than expected. Bad thing is that replacement bodypanels are not available so all the existing and affected panels have to be repaired what makes things more difficult. On the other hand it does not have to become a showwinner.

Positive is that I managed to get a built subframe meant for a Honda D-series engine. Means that I only have to place other engine mounts.

I love these. They were also fitted with 1.0 3 cylinder Daihatsu turbo engines and MacPherson struts. The engine was the fore runner of the Charade GTti engine

I owned once an Innocenti with a 3-cylinder Daihatsu. Bought that one together with a Charade turbo but in the end never got round to do the conversion. The Innocenti ended up on the scrapyard and I sold the turbo engine. The doors and bootlid from that car will be used for this one.

Picked up a built subframe meant for a Vtec. It is a basic frame without enginemounts. Going to improve and strengthen it here and there and fit a Suzuki engines ofcourse. Saves a lot of time and the price was ok.

Saves a lot of time getting the frame like that,is there much more room in the Inno for the Swift engine.

Never really took measurements, but I think the Suzuki will fit with only minor modifications to the body.

It has been a while since my last post but after some big disappointments: means more rust than expected I am on the way back again. After grinding in the back I ended up with a very big hole.

Because there are no repairpanels I got a bit on a crossroad: continue or the car to the scrapyard. I decided for the first and asked a friend with some more bodywork experience for help.

Today he went to work and the result you see below. Still a lot of work to be done in the boot, but I am very happy with the result for now.
