The fabricated box is currently bolted up at the moment, it will be welded up soon.

So glad to get this done as it was really holding up the rest of the build as I needed to get the frame mounted properly and all mods done before I could crack on with the rest of the fitting. I feel a milestone has been reached

Reading back through my posts I noticed I'd said this when got it back on the road in 2011 after swapping the rear subframe. Something I'd not mentioned was that at the same time I'd fitted new dampers all round.

When I started stripping the car last year I found the drivers side top damper bolt was loose, I probably just didn't tighten it up properly (it was a Nylock so unlikely to have come undone itself) - I reckon that might have been the cause of the creaking as it wasn't doing it before I took the car of the road in 2009 to do the subframe ...

The moral of this story - always check and then double-check your nuts

My mate came around on Saturday to weld in the box for the steering rack and discovered why I've been having so much trouble welding - user error !! I hadn't turned the regulator valve all the way and I was effectively gas-less welding and wondering why my welds looked like bird-poo !! Much hilarity on his part and much embarrassment on mine but hopefully things should run a bit smother (and my welds !!) now the - ahem !! - problem has been resolved.

I spent some time at my garage at the weekend trying to trial mount my B16 in the Custom-Minis frame. After a lot of swearing I found that the motor was getting jammed in the frame with the downpipes from the manifold catching on the front cross member and the gearbox on the back of the frame. Olli from Custom-Minis had supplied some pics of a B16 mounted in my frame which he took when he was building the frame and the difference is that he did not have the exhaust manifold fitted. Looking at these compared to my motor sitting in the frame, the gearbox is further forward so it seems the manifold is stopping me moving the engine far enough forward.

I am going to remove my manifold and try again.

With exhaust manifold off I managed to get the engine mounted in the frame but had some trouble with the rear mount.

It should fit like this:-

But I've run out of adjustment on the rear mount, the mount is fully unwound and but in the above pic it looks like only 30odd-mm of thread is showing. I must be doing something wrong so I've messaged poor Olli at Custom-Minis again for help !!

I have a nice tubular exhaust manifold that doesn't look like it will fit with the front bar of the subframe. Once I get the engine position sorted I will have to see what I can do or if I need to find a different manifold.

It's all fun (that's what I keep telling myself) !!!

I've also taken delivery of an M-Factory 3.4 diff for LSD, a Clutchmasters hydraulic internal release bearing and a light flywheel. Minispares also delivered my new front end panels so plenty to be getting on with .....
