all good till you have an accident. By all accounts track car or scrap car.

I've done some more digging and have found a bit of info that VOSA have confirmed that removable or 'flip' fronts (either steel, carbon fibre or grp etc) on minis are fine and are not considered a modification to the monocoque as this part is not structural. It also implies that other small modifactions to a body are ok (such as drilling extra holes etc). They also state that each car is considered on it's own so some common sense is used.
Again this is only if the car is picked for a random inspection which is VERY rare and VOSA rely on you telling them that the car doesn't have the 8 required points and needs an IVA. In other words, don't panic! very little will change for most of us, even those with rear engines etc as VOSA will still be relying on you telling them the car needs an inspection.

If there is a tick box for modified vehicles then you are telling them.

Also I can't see anywhere that the tick box will not appear for any age of car ... if so then their list of modified vehicles will be very long indeed.

Well, its one of the reasons I've hardly touched the car this year. I have been thinking for sometime now to build something crazy, but that really it would have to be a track car. All I can say is that these proposals and legislation that the EU dreamt up have been rumbling on for a while now, but I was informed 2 years back by the MOT man that the tick box was coming. He said that when they MOT the vehicle they will have to tick the box upon what they find / feel. So as that's all electronic now, once that's done VOSA / DVLA will know.

I wonder what are the feelings of the insurance companies that we all use. Maybe it isn't a big loss to them? What about talking to Z cars and Watsons etc to get their view/ opinion as it would surely affect some of their sales??

I can't help but be surprised that there were only approx. 2000 people who responded to the consultation. Was below most peoples radar I guess.
Probably no great loss to insurance companies as people will still be insuring a car with them, just not a modified one ... companies that specialise in car mods however will suffer.

I'm getting pretty old myself these days, no idea why I'm carrying a spare engine all the time in the boot and that engine in the front was a factory option I thought

Previous owner told me it came like that?

Indeed they are going to have a rather long list of modded cars, which they will be looking to tax, maybe extra, that's going to be their main focus.

Good news on the flip front situation

Only thing with these becoming just track cars is that most tracks want to see an mot or insurance?

don't panic, the tick box will only be a deceleration that the car is modified, it won't tell the dvla/vosa how modified the car is or weather it needs an IVA. It is simply there so non standard cars don't get historic status and will be required to still have an annual mot. As other have said, there will be thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of cars that tick the box and there's no way they have the resources to start investigating them. IVA stays the same - if your car needed one before, it will still need one. nothing has changed. I would be wary of not ticking the box though, I imagine there will be harsh penalties for those that have modified cars and don't tick the box.

Agreed as it would basically be tax evasion and they won't like that!

From the report it effects something like 250,000 cars

I've declared an engine change many years ago but still had historic on my v5, its now that i think there'll be a problem when i go to tax it online having to tick the box for modified. Not sure if they'll send me a different v5 that doesn't say historic anymore !

I'm too old for all this confusion, i just need my slippers and a pipe if i smoked lol
