If I am right the Dizzy you have is actually firing too often, the cut at 5500 will be the ECU thinking its at 7600.
They only thing in the engine that will tell the ECU to retard the timing is the dizzy. That's my 10p worth anyway, cant see what else would cause the timing to retard
The G13B Dizzy's either have 12 pickup points or 4, all the GTI ones we have looked at have 4, the Justy (8v) one we have just pulled apart has 12.
If that's right then mine has 8 FFS.

Pull one of the leads out Paul & watch it sparking, I bet its manic, also pull the plugs, I bet they are black from over fueling

I meant to say it has 12. it has like 4 lots of 3 inside. as for the plugs they are very clean and lean.

This sounds about right actually.
Explains the correct fuel pressure and clean/hot plug!

Yes, if the dizzy is firing too often, your plugs will become hotter, burning off all carbon and giving it the appearance of running lean (which it may well be.)

In my mind, with the possible ignition problems, I assumed you'd have a weak or non-consistent spark, causing lack of power. - I never once thought it could be sparking too much, this is very rare for most circumstances.
As the plugs weren't showing signs of carbon, I assumed it wasn't lack of ignition, it was lack of fuel. . .
As you said fuel pressure was consistent, I assumed you may have injector issues rather than fuel pump/filter, it's not too uncommon for the spray pattern to deform or for them to become blocked.

It gets very confusing now.....if it wasn't already. The loom that came with the doner car has a 3 pin triangular socket for the dizzy. The engine from the same car came with the dizzy that had a 3 pin triangular plug.

The spare one from Dan and the one jerry is speaking about has a 2 pin?

How many different dizzy types did they use on 1989 suzuki Swift GTI?

With your new found information and theories, you might get better technical help on specific differences between the engines. - Good luck.

Ive just checked the spark and it does appear to be going full clap but without something to compare i'm not sure. i tried to take a video but the refresh rate on the camera can't keep up and it looks like the light is on all the time

I'm going up the motorfactors with the spare dizzy and try to get a rotor arm and cap

I think the different plugs is a red herring Paul, the third wire (black) as you say doesnt go anywhere. The important thing is the pickup points in the distributor

OK i just spoke to Steve S who said that the dizzy on mine is the same as the one on Smurfies blue one. Kind of puts that theory out of the window
