Default 1242cc Fiat 8 valve (Punto 75) in round nose.

Ive moved this thread from the Chat board and changed the spec a bit,it was originally going to be a Fiat 1242 16v engine from a Punto Sporting but have now decided to go down the 8v route after talking to a few mechanic chums and reading some online 16v tuning articles.

I didnt get chance to progress with the build this weekend due to my worskshop looking like pit and needing a good sort out,then the workshop up and over door decided to break and so needed reparing.
On a good note my local Fiat breakers list a Punto 75 on their website so ive emailed them for a price and availability on the engine.

Ive been hard at it this weekend and now have reasonably descent looking subframe.




Drivers side tacked in position......ran out of gas




Got some gas and welded it in



Looking good



Temporary brace welded in to allow me to chop out and replace the front rail.

Ive got a length of 40x40x3mm box to make a new extended front rail to give some extra clearance for the exhaust manifold.

I managed to get the front rail fitted today, Ive moved it forwards to sit closer to the bumper recess to give me more space for the exhaust manifold.


Thr bolt is through the front panel/subframe mount hole.


This is the join inside.

For anyone considering a Fiat conversion the ePER Fiat online parts database is really helpful, it can be found on The FiatForum.com at.......

Its a great help to me for sorting out which gearbox has what diff ratio etc.

I had a good day yesterday and managed to get the gearbox pretty much where I want it to be.

I had to notch the subframe to allow the gearbox move across.






Its a bit of a snug fit....






Then had to trim back to increase clearance for the gear change
.

Plenty of space.


And cut a small notch to clear the diff housing.


Then trim out the tower hole to clear the CV boot.


CV clearance with drive shaft hanging from a bungee



Ive also managed to source a Mk1 Punto 60 engine with a blown head gasket from the same mate who gave me the gearbox, so that will help me get the engine mount sorted, I might use the 60 bottom end and replace the head gasket and fit a Punto 75 head and cam Ive just won on eBay.

Well ive now brought a complete Punto 75 engine from ebay so things will be progressing again,this also means I will have spare head and cam.

I had one of those "freaky" occurrences today.......
I was in the garage discussing the engine conversion with a mate who will shortly be starting his own Micra conversion and we were chatting about what size steel tube to use when I make the inlet manifold.
We measured the inlet port size and mulled over several possibilities and then in a moment of inspiration I remembered my sons old stunt scooter handlebars were kicking around somewhere, I dug them out......and when I cut the steerer section to suit the port/head the resulting oval shape matches the ports exactly....!!!!...Freaky.
So now I have 16" of 4130 seamless chromoly tube ready and waiting....superb.

Ill post some pics tomorrow to prove it.

The engine turned up today and first impressions are good.

Thanks to an easy job today I was able to get to the garage this afternoon and have had guite a productive time....


I borrowed this recipricating saw from work and its made the job a lot easier.



This ali lug is the crank sensor mount,as I'm converting back to distributor ignition it now surplus so I sawed it off.




All gone.

I then bolted the gearbox to the engine and couldnt help myself......i had to give it a try and see what it looked like. It was obvious that the plate section under the sump had to be trimmed to allow the engine to sit lower,then the support frame would have to come off as it to would be holding the engine up too high. When I unbolted the supprt frame nothing "pinged" and the bolts were all a snug fit in it so the subframe has'nt twisted with all the welding.


I marked the section to be cut out to clear sump and set about sawing and chain drilling the curves.


I also had to cut the upper edge off to clear the. Oil pump. I will have to weld in an angle section to give it a bit more strength.


The engine then sat down nice and squarely


Then I tried my bonnet to see what clearances were like.......and its not too bad.



And this is the space for the Suzuki 600 Bandit carbs that I won last night on fleebay.

So I suppose it engine mounts next,ive got a plan in my head for them but at the moment I dont have the bits to make them.

After spending the last few days trying to jiggle a stupid K series into place, this looks like it pretty much drops straight in!

Love the plate design of the subframe, makes it look really at home in there.

This weekend has been spent making and fitting the engine and gearbox mounts, a friend had some Mk1/2 Escort track control arm bushes sitting in a drawer which he had got from another chum who used to use them as engine mounts in his 2litre Spedeworth hotrod to support a 2litre Pinto engine so they should be fine with a flyweight Fiat engine.


First off I cut a piece of the 3mm folded section then removed the tin end cover from the gearbox and layed it on and marked the 7 bolt holes and the inner hole.


Then I had the labourious task of chain drilling the centre hole....68 holes drilled twice (pilot & main) and the finished off shaping the hole with a die grinder.


Then I cut and welded a pair of strengthening gussets.


This is where it fits sandwiched between the box and end cover.


Next I cut a section of mountain bike fork steerer tube and welded in position and when it had all cooled down pushed a TCA bush into it.


These were then cut,drilled and welded into position.


For the first engine mount I used some 3mm folded angle and drilled it to suit 3 exsisting bolts on the block.


This is the basic idea ive got.


Again I used a section of fork steerer and welded into place, then I postioned the mount against the tower and drilled 3 holes to bolt the mount to the tower, I know it looks a bit "arse about face" with the captive nuts on the front but space is tight when the doughnut is fitted in the tower so ill use mushroom headed allen bolts for the main build.


Finally iremoved all the old fixings into the block and fitted new bolts,i also cut and welded a stregthening gusset.


All done.


All nice and level too.


The front engine mount will go somewhere here.


Now I can start to think about where theses babies go..........BROOOOOMAAAAAH!!!!....... sorry.


This is the shape of the inlet manifold flange that I will be attempting next,if anyone knows someone in the Eastbourne area who is handy with a freehand plasma cutter then speak up other wise its chain drill time again......cant wait.

Time for an update I think....
Ive sold the 1989 saloon which I was going to fit the engine into and brought this beauty



So my priorities have now chaged to sorting out the shell rot before getting back on the Fiat engine.
