Depends what you want from the car - an A-road hooligan, then stick with 4.4.
Long-legged motorway cruiser, then 3.7 or 3.4

I thoroughly hate the gearing in my standard s9b, 1st is pointless, 2nd isn't much better.

I plan to fit an Mfactory 4.05 in the very near future.

4.2 to 4.0 isn't going to give a huge improvement IMHO

Cheers for the input, I have been changing my mind between the 3.7 and the 4.0... perhaps the 3.7 is the way to go, especially if Iím adding a few horses in the future.

Sorry to thread hijack OP

I'm going 3.7 on mine. I thought I was happy with the 4.4 until I mistakenly did a 2nd gear start and realised how much better that was.

I don't actually think there is a right or wrong answer to the OP's question, it's a personal and subjective thing

people with 4.4's will sometimes come on and promote them, there was even a guy with a 4.6 or similar and claimed he loved it, 3.7 is perfect.

Not your typical heated leather seated track day car but it does have heated leather!

What is the best way to use this car?

As fynn said, all down to preference and we don't know what yours is

Watsons (UK) = 3.4 and 3.7
MFactory (US) = 3.4 and 4.05
Minitec (US) to a 3.4 but not sure who makes theirs
Housmann (Canada) = 3.4

I can't think of any more off the top of my head

Going driving normal roads, been offered a 3.9. would be worth swapping. Surely there is a best, just don't want high noise at 60mph

I live in a country town in South Australia and have only driven the car hard once - at a local hillclimb. The gearing was perfect - 2nd gear start and reached flat out in 4th. But when it's licensed I want to drive it on the road, and the gearing won't suit that at all. It would also be too short for most race tracks.

All depends on what you want to do with the car. Personally, I'll probably drop a 3.9 into it so it will still perform OK in competition, and not drive me mad on the road (too much). Best compromise I can think of offhand.

Bear in mind too, that due to the way a B16 revs, you'll still achieve 125mph+ with a 4.4 FD.

Having said that, if I were in a position to easily strip the box (i.e. engine / box is out of the car already), and having had the car on the road for a good while, I'd personally plump for a 3.7
