Default hi to all. 998 8v twin cam.

Hi all just fort I would say hello.
I am thinking of doing a BMW twin cam 998 8v conversion.
I have spoken to specialist comments the other weekend at the Mini Fair.
They said they have done one or two of the conversions. And it will cost the same just that the 1275 will produce 20 horse more. But will cost me 500 more to buy an engine.

I am looking at getting the 120 pistions from Australia 485 delivered.

Just wanted peoples thoughts.

I think you will be kicking yourself later in life if you didn't go for the 1275. 500 for 20hp is not bad tuning upgrade.

It really depends what you what from the engine, if you just want something different or if you just want a quick 1000cc motor then I say go for it. If you're after silly power then you'll always be playing catch up to a 1275 so you might as well take the plunge now.

I'm just after a fast 1L. Nothing with massive power.
About 80-100bhp.

But I could lighten and balance things for that extra 500.
And I have already striped my 998 out of the car ready for rebuild.
I just like the idea when people ask what engine do you have, and saying it's a 998 mini engine. (to be different) lol.

The 998 will be a delight in balance and match the head very well.I must however note that my 1275 K1100 will rev to the limiter of 8500 without any issues. The original 998 was blessed with balance over the 1275 but I wonder what the advantage is with the K1100 LET head that flows so much better. Have you asked S/C?

Well I am looking at about 3k for the conversion, but I think it might go over that. As I can't do any of the machining.
Yes I have spoken to S/C, they have done a few 998 conversions. Will have to ask them some more questions. .

If I am totally honest I have never done anything like this. Where do I start? I have decided 998 over 1275.

Only 20 tho smaller and a lot cheaper. I believe these are the same Australian piston (Russell Engineering) so Keith might even be able to get the +120 tho sets as well.

The thing at the end is what do you want, an ultra high revving, well breathing 998 can be something really exciting, it would compliment a Honda conversion greatly, it's just so exotic. The point is what do you want?

I have the 1275, you can use it everyday provided you put a civilised exhaust and with 135-140 bhp and a perfectly flat torque there is not much to complain about, but the 998 is simply more like "Cooper S original".

For a Toy, you will get close to 100 bhp and have something unique...

I am welding up my shell. I have done bolt on customizations but no engine rebuilds yet. Currently at college doing my lv 2 motor vehicle course.

Well the engine is out and striped to just the block atm. And it was quite strong when it was in the car. Was going to just change the rings and bearing. Then put it in standard.
I'm sure I emailed Russell Engineering and they couldn't make them. Coz it would cost too much. Will email that company, 250 less than from Australia aswell.

I want something different but don't want to spend loads and loads. Yes I want a unique engine. But I have no experience in custom engine builds.

well done sounds good for a start,,
998 is a solid little lump, whats the year and modle?milage? I ask as if its qwite late it will need the crownwheel/pinion changing as they wont pull the skin off a rice pudding
and im asumeing you want it to go? else you wouldent be considering that head convo,
was the gearchanges free of crunches around 2nd and 3rd?
that would be nice and save you a pain up the munchskin,

My mini is a rover mayfair H reg. had 78k on the clock before i started the restoration.
yer i want it to go or i would just do a stage two kit with a RC40. yer all workings on the engine were smooth.

i have been looking so might change my mind,
http://www.allspeedengineering.com/index.php/nissan with a nissan Figaro 1.0L Turbo in that frame. someone said it is the same engine as micra 16v just with a turbo.
hummmm
