I would check the caulk before using externally...bad idea I think as caulk always always shrinks

two options
strip weatherboard and use breathable membrane
or use a solid board insulation such as kingspan ( foil faced closed cell polyuerhtane foam boards ) b&q sell jablite which is like a dense polystyrene

is that the 255mm flipover or 305mm?
I would suffer the heart ache and do it right or it willnot get fixed properly and its a shame to cut corners when you can cut more wood.ps nice work
