I've been looking at this for a couple years now. The easiest route would be to mate the electric motor to a regular transmission. This would keep servicing as close to standard as possible and you can play with the gearing.
I work at an electric lift truck dealer so motors are easy to find! As others mentioned batteries are the draw back. I would like to look further into adding a generator to top up or extend the range (kinda like the Chevy volt).

Need to finish my current build first tho !!
