Exactly the same problem I had. I had some custom arm pins & spacers made to space the back plates and drums out and then used 1" pcd adapters to give an extra 1" to fit the metro wheels.

Where is the feed for the pump run from? and what type of pick up pipe is there in the tank? Some rubber pipe can perish if their sat in fuel constantly.

I know this sounds like a stab in the dark but could it be that the master cylinder isn't moving enough fluid to move all 8 pistons in the front and the rear slaves at the same time? Marcus say's...

No you can only buy the complete rods from rimmer bros, I found a place that sell the plastic rod end and bought a couple for the same reason (to much play/slack) but can't for the life of me...
