Specialists Components build help

I posted this on the build log by mistake: hopefully the moderators can delete the other post:

i have a complete sc setup built by them, 1360 motor k1100 16v head, purchased several years ago but finally ready to run having a hard time with the wiring hook up i need to find someone that has actually gotten theirs running support is very spotty at best from sc and the wiring harness they sent with it has no diagram and all the wires are black ? engine has fuel at right pressure, good oil pressure, turns over but will not fire, solid power to the injectors but not the pulse power they need to open?? tried spraying a little starter fluid while turning over and nothing so pretty sure no spark either. hard to get any support either from anyone here in the states would really like to chat with someone by pm or even phone as i want to get mine running i talked to one shop and he wanted to sell me a complete new system from megasquirt as he claimed the sc setup is outdated and wont work? thanks

Hi,

Interesting. My SC set up (1380 k110016V LT running on Typhoon components) worked first time but was tough to set up.

I need to know the Engine Management System you have and can you please post a couple of pics of the wiring that I see the similarities?

hi, thanks for the reply, i will take some pictures and send them, i am not sure what management system we have? all i have is an ecu box that says Specialists Components on it. not wiring diagrams or charts came with the motor when they shipped it. i talked with one mechanic and suggested to scrape their system and install a megasquirt i dont want to do this until i get it running and see what i think first. did your ecu come from SC? or did you buy it as a stand alone?

gimenofl 27-06-2014 12:05 PM

NONONO, THEIR SYSTEM IS PRETTY FANSTASTIC. Do you have the USB connector and all to programm it?

jimfai 27-06-2014 12:14 PM

right, i want to use their system, i have known about this car since the build was started almost 10 years ago, i referred the previous owner to SC in the first place as an option because he wanted to go vtec. i bought the car as an abandoned project a year ago and have just about finished it. i have no paperwork at all from SC with the car so i emailed them and asked to send me a manual , and yes it has the usb connector but it is only a 4 plug which means it is a narrow band system and these are much harder to program if my little bit of research is correct?? hopefully they will email me a manual, jim

Look, for what it is worth, the SC soft is pretty simple and so far very reliable, you get coolant temp, air temp as correction factors for the fuelling and then throttle and crankshaft position. Typhoon only plays with advance and injector pulse width.

I understand you injectors do not click, they should. Do you get spark? in case you do not have either (spark or clicks) start at the Crankshaft position sensor.

Of course you have checked that the little earth cable on the engine compartment loom is grounded? Because otherwise NOTHING works.

My problem setting it up was linked to idle quality after installation and (unrelated to the engine) fuel pressure. It took a bit of re-mapping but at the end, really, I see no point in going Megasquirt.

i agree with you about not using megasquirt, when i had looked at megasuqirt 10 years ago i didnt like it and even though this mechanic said it was different it is not. very vague, no real plant, offices or location. no support or dealer network either. but i am off track. so i got what manual sc has by email from them.

checked out the tp sensor and it was way too large a gap, closed it to .85 mm

fuel pressure is correct

oil pressure in the motor is good

yes the ground wire is hooked up,

did not have time to try and restart it yesterday and the shop is closed for the weekend. going to give it a go monday morning.

so typhoon is the brand of the ecu? where would i find software to program their unit? my car does not have an o2 sensor? is this a requirement when programming?

gimenofl 28-06-2014 07:10 PM

No, they work open loop, oxygen sensor is not needed. Just check on monday now that the CPS is turning. You can download the software of SC in their site and Typhoon is just the name, I think it's SC that makes it. You will need an adaptor from them.

jimfai 29-06-2014 08:14 PM

what type of adapter are you referring to?

gimenofl 30-06-2014 02:05 PM

USB to serial port adater. Their S/C plus is a resial port, then tehre is a little adapter that converts the serial port signal to an USB compatible signal.

jimfai 30-06-2014 05:46 PM

Still no luck getting to start. Ground wire in the engine loom is hooked up . Power at the injectors but no pulse for them to open. Sc. Suggested to swap out the plug in for the water temp sensor and the tps as they said many people get these reversed. No change. any other suggestions? Ecu does not seem to be sending a signal. No spark either as I tried to put a little starter fluid in the tB. Thanks.Jimm

gimenofl 30-06-2014 06:22 PM

Stupid questions: have you checked whether the ECU sees voltage? Do you have an oscilloscope to check CPS signal?

In case it does not click the injectors its the CPS or the ECU not being activated alltogether? Can you please post some images with the ECU and its plus. Having the software would immensely facilitate diagnostics...

Does the fuel pump (ECU activated) run?

jimfai 30-06-2014 06:43 PM

Yes. Fuel pump comes on and pressures up proper when key is turned o. Wired through ecu

ecu has good power and grounand

power to one side of injector but nothing to the other side

no .spark

Brumski 30-06-2014 07:19 PM

Right. I run a dta on my twink but had similar issues. Check where you are getting the main power from. If you wire into ignition position 1 live then the power cuts/drops off on cranking so, of course the ECU stops working. Temporarily put positive feed straight from battery to ecu live in and see what happens. I had to fit a 'bridging' switch that needs pressing when turning key to position 2 to start it to keep the live power going.

Hope that makes sense...

jimfai 30-06-2014 07:31 PM

Makes a lot of sense. Gonna give that awhirl now
